This week I decided to change things up a bit. I have really felt like we needed to focus more on just building Godly character traits and a little less on the details of ancient civilizations. I have just noticed a build up of laziness, arguing, whiny-ness and other undesirable qualities coming forth in my children.
So, I decided that we change our schedule a bit and see how it goes.
Before the kids are allowed to come down for breakfast, they have to have their room cleaned. By cleaned I mean, bed made and everything off the floor and put away. Nothing puts me on the verge of a craziness quite like walking into their room. So, this helps my attitude in the morning, knowing their room is mostly picked up.
Nicole has learned how to make a pot of oatmeal in the morning. She even has to clean up the mess ;)
After breakfast we go for a walk, or bike ride, or something active. This has been a lot of fun, and the kids love it. The first day we found some sticks that they have kept as "walking sticks". Nate pretty much hit everything he possibly could with his stick, while the girls looked for crevices and holes in the sidewalk (mimicking the show they saw of someone walking on a glacier and putting their stick in front of their steps as they walked).
The first day we found an Earthworm, which was Perfect! Why do you ask? Because our science for this week was about invertebrates and their major groups. One of which are segmented worm....Earthworms are a part of that group. Woohoo for tying in our current memory work into our "nature walk". So, we brought the earthworm home and Nicole played with it most of the day. Hopefully she didn't kill it before putting it in my flower garden out back :/
On another morning, we ended up at the volleyball courts where the kids decided to dive into the sand like it was snow. Yep, "sand angels" and all.
Generally after our morning walk, run or bike ride I'm hoping to implement some sort of service project. We weren't able to do that this week because the worm took up so much time and excitement and the sand needed to be washed immediately. However, next week we will be pulling weeds around the house. Also in the works will be washing the outside of the windows, sanding the play set and re-staining the play set. I want my children to work hard. I want them to do hard sweaty work and not complain about it or try to get out of it. So, we are starting slowly and doing 15 minutes a day right now.

After our hard work, we'll head upstairs and do a little fun school work. We'll work on our Bible memory, go over our CC memory work using games and read from our Bible studies. We'll also work on some art at this time. This week we reviewed our CC memory work by earning puzzle pieces for every question they got right (I'm pretty impressed by Hannah's memory right now!). Then, they put the puzzle together. It was harder than I thought it would be for them, hahaha.
In the afternoon Nicole and I will focus on her spelling and math. I mentioned before that we took last week off. This week we started back at list A with our Spell to Write and Read program. Nicole was frustrated, and I was lost where we were at before. So, I spent last week reading the manual again, and we started fresh. I must say that she did a wonderful job and got all of her spelling words right! I think we'll do a little better this time around.
I think Hannah is ready to start reading. Mostly because she really, really wants to. But, her handwriting needs more time. So, I let her start list A with us, but instead of writing the words, she is using magnetic letters to form the words. It worked really well. I was quite pleased.
We had a great time looking through lots of books about invertebrates throughout the week and learned a lot about jellyfish. We even got to go to SeaWorld on Saturday and put some of our knowledge to the test. It was quite exciting.

| Can't leave out my little man. He had a great time! (and was SO well behaved!!) |
Nicole learned a little about Dichotomous Keys. We are going to do more this week with some fun Dichotomous Key using Jelly Belly's and
Candy Bars :)
I cleaned my desk this week ;)
All in all, it was a good week:)
